BTF President Brooke Rodriguez Joins Dayamani Barla & Other Indigenous Activists to Discuss Water, Forest, Land, and Women’s Liberation
We are excited to extend our heartfelt thanks to Professor Pratik Raghu of the New School's Environmental Sustainability and Management program for his generous $250 donation to the Borikua Taino Foundation! His support strengthens our ongoing efforts to uplift Taíno culture and address Indigenous rights.
Board President Brooke Rodriguez was invited by Professor Pratik to join a meaningful panel discussion at The New School with globally recognized Adivasi journalist and activist Dayamani Barla, a leader in environmental justice and Indigenous rights, focusing on the protection of water, forests, and land from the impacts of neoliberal policies. Brooke shared insights on how colonialism and climate change intersect to impact Indigenous food sovereignty in Borikén (Puerto Rico) and emphasized the importance of building relationships across Indigenous communities to foster solidarity.
This event, hosted by The New School’s Environmental Policy and Sustainability Management Program in partnership with the India China Institute, provided a space for Indigenous activists from diverse backgrounds to share stories, advocate for policy change, and inspire unity in environmental and feminist movements. Patrik’s contribution helps us continue this work and connect with Indigenous advocates across the globe.
In April 2023, The New School welcomed Dayamani Barla, known as the “Iron Lady of Jharkhand,” for the Water, Forest, Land, and Women’s Liberation lecture series. A renowned Adivasi feminist activist from India, Barla has fought for nearly four decades to protect Indigenous rights and natural resources. In her keynote and transnational dialogue, she discussed the impacts of neoliberalism on Indigenous communities and her commitment to defending jal (water), jangal (forest), and zameen (land).
