Local Taino Monument in Need of Restoration
On our journey through Isabela, we visited La Cara del Indio, a monument carved into the cliffside that honors Cacique Mabodamaca of Guajataca, one of the last Taíno leaders to resist Spanish colonization in Boriken. His bravery in defending his people left a lasting legacy that was immortalized in 2000 when then-mayor Charlie Delgado Altieri commissioned artist Isaac Laboy Moctezuma to carve the face into the hillside. The monument serves as a tribute to indigenous strength and resilience, commemorating Mabodamaca’s courage in the face of colonization. Tragically, Cacique Mabodamaca chose to end his life by jumping from a cliff in Isabela rather than accept colonial rule.
Unfortunately, we were disappointed to see the monument in poor condition, marred by graffiti and neglect. The stone plaque was also very weathered and difficult to read. We left small offerings and prayers before leaving. This is a painful reminder of how important it is to protect and respect these cultural landmarks for future generations.
